Industrial Context: Contemporary Context of Music Videos and the Industry

 



Finance: 

The record label that an artist is signed to finance the production of music videos and receive the royalties that these videos generate. Music videos produce revenue through product placement, digital downloads, streaming and they also produce indirect revenue through serving as advertising for the artist which can cause an uprise in tour and merchandise sales 

Distribution: 

Music videos are now primarily distributed digitally through distributors such as Ditto, PeekSound and DistroVid. These companies sign deals with record labels to allow them to publish and sell music videos onto platforms such as VEVO, YouTube and Apple Music where they are streamed and broadcasted to public consumers. However, sometimes these distributors are not utilised when dealing with smaller independent artists. In recent years, many artists have distributed and gained music video popularity via social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, furthering audience reach and maintaining a following.
