Industrial Context: Research into Universal as a brand

 Universal Music Group (UMG)

UMG is apart of the 'big three' music companies currently operating (Sony, UMG, Warmer Music Group) and is currently the largest label out of the three. As a widespread conglomerate, UMG has signed a myriad of artists spanning from multiple genres including: Taylor Swift, Drake, Billie Eilish, SZA, Elton John and Kendrick Lamar. 

UMG have described their core values to be authenticity, boldness, creativity, connection, drive and insight. They own a plethora of labels and divisions but most artists belong to Interscope Records, Abbey Road Studios and Def Jam recordings.


Abbey Road Studios

Abbey Road Studio is one of the most famous recording studios in the world and has been a global icon for over 90 years as a musical home to iconic artists such as The Beatles, Ella Fitzgerald, Kate Bush, Oasis and Adele. It was the worlds first purpose-built recording studio and has housed many innovations in recording technology.



Interscope Records

Interscope Records was founded in 1990 and differed from most record labels as it allowed artists and producers full creative control of artistic decisions. Some of Interscope's signed musicians include Eminem, Lady Gaga , Yungblud and Renee Rapp.


Def Jam Recordings

Since 1984, Def Jam has been a music label that represents the vibrant and innovative sounds of hip-hop. Beginning as an independent music label, Def Jam was powered by the street culture of New York and signed to iconic stars such as Public Enemy, Slick Rick and The Beastie Boys. Eventually, UMG took ownership over Def Jam- expanding their scope to become a global brand encompassing emerging artists such as Kanye West, Jay-Z, Big Sean and Jhene Aiko.



UMG has a global reach and facilitates to a wide variety of audiences across the world.
